1. Graduating from the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology in 2006, (where she was a classmate of Leona Lewis and Jessie J), Adele was given a recording contract by XL Recordings after a friend posted her demo on Myspace.

2. Adele provided vocals for Jack Peñate’s song, “My Yvonne,” for his debut 2007 album, and it was during this session she first met producer Jim Abbiss, who would go on to produce both the majority of her debut album, 19, and tracks on 21.

3. Adele made her television debut, performing “Daydreamer” on the BBC’s Later… with Jools Holland in June 2007.

8. When on tour, Adele requires all backstage visitors to donate a minimum charitable contribution of $20 for the UK charity SANDS, an organisation dedicated to “supporting anyone affected by the death of a baby and promoting research to reduce the loss of babies’ lives”.

10. Her song “Chasing Pavements” was inspired by an incident Adele had with a former boyfriend of six months. After learning he had cheated on her, she went to the bar he was at and punched him in the face. After being thrown out, Adele walked down the street alone and thought to herself, “What is it you’re chasing? You’re chasing an empty pavement.”

16. While “Someone like You” was at number one on the US chart, Adele’s previous single, “Rolling in the Deep” was still at number four. With that achievement, Adele became the first living artist since The Beatles in 1964, who simultaneously had two top five hits in the charts.

Lil Nas X seemed amused when a sex toy landed on stage while he was performing in Sweden.

Ed Sheeran, 32, was ranked the seventh wealthiest with a fortune of £300m, helped by his fast-selling sixth album Subtract. Adele was in ninth place with £165m. Harry Styles had the biggest-selling UK album last year with 'Harry's House'. The 29-year-old's wealth was said to be £150m.

More than 3.2 million records were sold in 2016, a rise of 53% on the previous year, according to the BPI, which represents the music industry. David Bowie's Blackstar was the most popular album on vinyl, selling more than double the number of copies of 2015's biggest-seller, Adele's 25.

According to the Official Charts Company one billion songs had now been downloaded in the UK. Adele's 'Someone Like You' was the most downloaded single of all time in the UK, followed by tracks by Maroon 5 and Gotye. The Official Charts Company said on average more than three million tracks were now sold every week.

According to sales data, Adele's 21 had overtaken Oasis’ (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? to become the UK’s fourth biggest selling album of all-time. Latest data confirmed that, Oasis’ 1995 second album had sold 4,555,000 copies to date, while Adele’s 21 has surged ahead with sales of over 4,562,000 copies. The news came just over a year since 21 overtook Amy Winehouse's Back To Black to become the UK's biggest selling album of the 21st Century.

Adele broke an American chart record that has stood for years after being set by The Beatles and Pink Floyd. The singers second album 21 clocked up 16 weeks at No.1 on the US chart matching the success of the Titanic original soundtrack. 21, released last January had now beaten The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's and Pink Floyd's The Wall which had previously held the accolade with runs of 15 weeks at No.1.
